2009 Honored Youth Author: Wendelin Van Draanen

Wendelin Van Draanen is the bestselling author of the Sammy Keyes mystery series. Now in its twelfth installment, this fast paced series stars a gutsy, contemporary middle school girl, and weaves together humor, suspense, and moral dilemmas. Ms. Van Draanen has been nominated five times for the Edgar, and has won once.  She has also penned other award-winning books for children and young adults including the Shredderman series and compelling stand-alone titles such as Flipped, Swear to Howdy, and Runaway. Wendelin hopes that her books will help youths see that they have the ability to steer their own destiny--that individuality is a strength, and that where there’s a will, there’s most certainly a way. A former high school computer science teacher, Wendelin now leads a doubly mysterious life as the mother of two teen boys.

"BOUCHERKIDS" PROGRAMMING:

[] Field trips to Bouchercon
On Friday, October 16, 2009, school groups and home schoolers came to Bouchercon at the Indiana Convention Center and interacted with mystery authors. Programming ran in 2 1/2 hour blocks between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Each session included interactive presentations by two to four mystery authors, followed by time to talk informally with the authors and collect autographs. Each student received a program booklet with space to collect author autographs. Authors' books were also available for purchase. Field Trip Day was for grades three through twelve.

[] Family Day at Bouchercon
On Saturday, October 17, 2009, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Indiana Convention Center, we conducted the first ever programming for children and families at Bouchercon. Saturday's "Boucherkids" registrants were also able to register to attend a special children's lunch with our Honored Children's/Young Adult Author Wendelin Van Draanen, the bestselling author of the Sammy Keyes mystery series.

A Special Dealer's Room
There was a kid-focused dealer's room with lots of children's and young adult authors talking about their books and providing  opportunities  for kids to get books autographed.

"BOUCHERKIDS" Logo Contest Winner!
"Boucherkids" is proud to announce the winner of our logo contest:  Sarah Cohen, age 13,  of the Berkeley Preparatory School in Tampa, Florida.

Sarah became interested in mysteries after reading The Hound of t
he Baskervilles last March for homework. She read more Sherlock Holmes stories on her own and visited Holmes forums on the internet. It was there that she learned about Bouchercon.

While visiting the Bouchercon website, she saw the information about our contest and entered. The judges liked Sarah's design because it was simple but still captured the themes of reading, mysteries and Indiana.

For creating the winning entry, Sarah received four t-shirts printed with her logo and a $50 gift certificate from The Mystery Company bookstore in Carmel, Indiana.  (Don't worry, Sarah, they do mail order.)
